There’s a word that feels like it came from the future—a flicker in your mind when you squint at “tomorrow” and realize it says something else entirely… Tornomov.
Pronounced tohr-noh-mawf, it captures a deeply unsettling feeling—the weird hollowness of trying to imagine the distant future. Not the next decade or even the next century, but a time so far ahead it becomes alien. You try to place it in some sort of context, to tether it to something familiar, but fail. Your imagination is limited by the edges of your era. It’s hard to believe the future could feel that different—and yet, history says otherwise.
This emotional vertigo isn’t just theoretical. Nuclear engineers, for example, confront it when designing warnings for radioactive waste sites—areas that will remain lethally dangerous for ten thousand years. How do you mark a place so that future civilizations—perhaps ones who don’t speak our language or even recognize our symbols—will understand the danger? Stainless steel corrodes. Granite erodes. Vegetation overtakes even the most imposing manmade structures. Words dissolve. Calendars reset. By AD 12000, any message we leave may be indecipherable. So if we can’t even tell our descendants “don’t dig here,” what connection do we really have to them?
Tornomov reminds us that the future isn’t just unknown—it may be unknowable. And that’s a deeply human realization.
